Come meet Belarus Free Theater Monday Night (in NYC)

Dear friends,
If you are in the NYC area, we invite you to come to a political salon discussion with the founders of Belarus Free Theater this Monday night (Sept 20) at the offices of the World Policy Institute. I have just spent the weekend with Natalia and Nikolai, and I'm again impressed by the urgency of their work as machinations to pre-arrange the upcoming Belarus election result in an atmosphere of dangerous impunity. Come meet them this Monday nite and learn of their high-caliber theater work.

The World Policy Institute has offered a special $5 admission for anyone from the fD community. If for any reason the admission cost is an obstacle, please let me know and I will put you on the comp list ... because it's most important to have you there! For those of you interested in continuing the conversation with the performers after the Salon, The Immigrant Winebar (341 Ninth Street, between First and Second Avenues) has offered us a special group discount.

In the past month, we have seen firsthand how dangerous culture work can be in areas where artists challenge (formal and informal) regimes of power, such as the murder of Leonardo Lisandro Guarcax, promoter and defender of indig.... In closing, I leave you with this quote from Bill Cleveland (Art and Upheaval, 2008):

“Historically, those intent on eliminating opposition and suppressing popular dissent have made a priority of quickly eliminating creators and thinkers from their midsts … if you scratch the surface of a human disaster you will find creators responding to the most difficult of circumstances, making art to live, to eat, to kindle the human spirit, to bring peace or to resolve conflict.”

Sincerely,
Todd Lester

PS, If any of you received a 'proposition' from Mirabel on this site, we figured out she was a spammer and banned her. Please do not hesitate to let us know if someone is breaching the community guidelines.
