I would like to thank Todd Lester and Freedimensional.org/ArtsRightsJustice from the core of my heart for your making this project materialise. A heartfelt thank you also to Jantine Wijnja and Denis Daniël Dennis de Wit from HotelMariaKapel for putting me up and supporting me psychologically through this! Thanks to two wonderful women: Pauline Burmann and Paula Vanzijl that brought the book back to the NLS for a great show! And thank you very much to Susan Clark who stuck by me through some hard times and Regina Willingham for your hard work!
Since I first introduced this graphic novel to my students it has sparked a meaningful and authentic discourse about surviving adversity, global awarness, social justice, personal/political power and responsibility. For reluctant readers who are in their late teens, graphic novels provide a safe sphere where meaning and personal connections are more easily made, literacy levels don't obscure the experiance and the learning. My students have since gone on the read A Long Way Gone and The Bite of the Mango. As this academic year draws to a close, the students of the North Surrey Learning Centre and I send you our thanks.
